There are many books which set out the more commonly used statistical methods in a form suitable for applications. There are also widely available computer packages for implementing these techniques in a relatively painless way. We have in the present book concentrated not so much on the techniques themselves but rather on the general issues involved in their fruitful application. The book is in two parts, the first dealing with general ideas and principles and the second with a range of examples, all, however, involving fairly small sets of data and fairly standard techniques. Readers who have experience of the application of statistical methods may want to concentrate on the first part, using the second part, and better still their own experience, to illuminate and criticize the general ideas. If the book is used by students with little or no experience of applications, a selection of examples from the second part of the book should be studied first, any general principles being introduced at a later stage when at least some background for their understanding is available. This book is divided into two parts. Part I is consisted of 50 pages of theoretical materials. Part II cover 24 examples, with each example divided into 4-6 sections entitled "Description of data", "General considerations", "Some methodological details" (if applicable), "The analysis", "Further points and exercises", and "Related references" (if applicable). Readers are supposed to read through the authors' analyses and then follow their leads to explore some of the more subtle points.
However, after a quarter century, I regret to say that this book begins to show its age. Some of the references dated in the 60's and 70's are no longer easy to get. The book also offers little insight as to how the tables and graphs are generated. Modern computational methods are hopelessly out of scope. The open questions force readers to think for themselves. But the lack of a coherent integration of the topics makes the discussions drift aimlessly. I can see how beginners may get lost in the maze of examples because readers can't progressively apply the lessons learned from the previous examples in the latter ones. The lack of any solutions and follow-up discussions makes this book a bad choice for self-learners.
The style of this book is like the books that teach how to play bridge. A bridge teacher would analyze game after game to hope that the student may learn something. This book employs the same strategy. If you don't like this style, then this book is not for you.
