I bought this book at least 20 years ago, and then either gave it away or simply lost it; Heaven knows! I am delighted beyond measure to have it back, via Alibris. It is what, in modern parlance, is a 'user friendly' publication. It guides the reader gently, but with scholarly authority, through the labyrinthine ways and by-ways of that elusive journey towards the answer to the question, "What is poetry?" It is, quite simply, a brilliant and completely accessible journey towards an understanding of the language of poetry. As a (now retired) Head of an English department in a comprehensive school I found the book invaluable in supporting my own teaching, particularly of Sixth Form literature students, and I bought a set of this book for those in my charge, One each; they loved it! It is a superb, informative, and humane approach to that seemingly unfathomable no-man's-land between prose and poetry, and I recommend it to the so-called general reader as a highly readable approach to such 'mysteries' as "What is a Lyric?....an Epic?....Rhythm?" etc. If you are not what you would call 'into poetry', read this book; you soon will be, and you will find your life inestimably enriched in the process.
