Seller's Description:
Fine in Very Good jacket. Book Octavo, hardcover, fine in near fine black and white pictorial dj. Best seller in France. Winner fo the Prix Concourt, Life Magazine's reader's prize and Prix Wizo (Jewish interest). 152 pages. translated from the French by Polly McLean. Written twenty years after both of his parents jumped to their deaths, "Memory" is author Philippe Grimbert's story of a family plagued by its sordid past. The sickly only child of glamorous athletic parents living in postwar Paris, the narrator retreats into the depths of his imagination and creates an older brother who is far more capable than he. After speaking with an old family friend, however, he learns that his imaginary sibling actually has a predecessor: a half brother who perished in the concentration camps, whose death was never intended to be uncovered. Spare, erotic, and cathartic, this novel unearths one's shameful marriage to his past and unravels a procession of dark desires.
While "Memory" is marketed as fiction, the depiction of characters and events is so real, so believable that it reads as memoir. The narrator's family, as constituted after the war - 2 parents and himself , is the remains of two couples and a child before the war. During the war, one husband served as a soldier who died in combat, one wife and her child were set off to a concentration camp. One husband and one wife slipped into unoccupied France and rode out the war. The secrets and betrayals during the war are told to the narrator in his teens by a family friend. This aspect of the story fits a classic coming-of-age story for a nominally Catholic, historically Jewish, boy in post-war France. But the book is more - it presents another view of the Jewish experience of the war, those who fled to safety at enormous cost.
