I have just completed a second order with Alibris - for nine Profile bound volumes - (Classic Cars In Profile, Warships In Profile, Aircraft In Profile, AFVs Of The World etc). In fact I obtained AFVs vol 5 German AFVs of WWII which includes 2 Profiles on the Tiger tank - the 2 major variants - on the same day (24th June 07) that I actually first saw a Tiger tank in action - but the books on review at this time are a set of 4 bound volumes of Locomotives In Profile covering Locomotive Profiles nos 1-36. Each bound volume usually includes 12 Profiles 288pp (later volumes only had 6 Profiles but are today scarcer and more expensive). I have a large transport and military library with several thousand books - books that often go into great analytical depth on a specific subject BUT there are many times when I enjoy reading a Profile. Each Profile is a booklet focussing on a narrowly defined subject which devotes about 24 pages of concentrated info + photos, plans, diagrams, tables, charts and a magnificent centre colour plate. You may say - only 24pp, isnt that a superficial treatment of a subject, but I continue to be amazed at how much data is concentrated into those 24pp. - almost like revision sheets before an exam. Profile Publications were based in Windsor, Berkshire, England in the 1960s/1970s and published in the USA by Doubleday NY but are sadly long since defunct. Today I seem to have a better chance of getting these books in the USA/Australia/New Zealand than in UK.
