Bought the book for a 5-week class on it. Liked the class better than the book. It is a fictionalized version of homesteading in Montana and, although interesting and colorful, was a bit too romantic in its coverage of the lives and struggles for my tastes.

Captivating Tale of the Power of Friendship
Mr. Doig presents the reader with a book that places unforgetable characters against the backdrop of turn of 19th Century Montana. The story focuses on the life long friendship and ultimately competition between two Scottish immigrants who find their way to Montana at the end of the 19th Century. The story parallels the evolution of that friendship with the trials, tribulations and rewards of building a future on the frontier of Montana. The story captures in very personal terms the pioneering spirit that drove people to leave Europe, risk the voyage to America and ultimately set out for a territory they knew little about just for the chance of a better life for themselves and their families. Doig chronicles the successes and heart-breaking failures of these people.
It is an exellent read and Ivan Doig is fast becoming my favorite writer.
