Have you forgotten the meaning of the Greek word translated "miracle " in the Gospel of St. John? Pupil.--Sign. Teacher.--And do we not read1 that false christs and prophets should arise, and "show great signs and wonders," insomuch that, if it were possible, they should "deceive the very elect"? It seems, 1 St. Matthew xxiv. 4. 60 MIRACLES ARE SIGNS. then, that there are, or may be, bad miracles or signs, as well as good. How are we to distinguish the good from the bad? Pupil.--I do not know. Teacher.--I think we shall be helped if we use the word sign instead of miracle. A miracle means simply something wonderful. A sign is an imperfect term, suggesting the need of further definition. What further question does the word sign suggest? Pupil.--It makes us ask, "A sign of what?" Teacher.--Apply this to the case above mentioned--the uprooted tree moving on its top. What is that a sign of? Pupil.--Power. Teacher.--Then you may believe that the man who works such a sign is powerful, but you need believe no more. But does this represent the signs worked by our Lord? I do not say that there are not one or two that seem mere signs of power. But the majority of our Lord's signs, what were they, and of what were they signs?
