Excerpt from Thule: Die Phonicischen Handelswege nach dem Norden: Insbesondere nach dem Bernsteinlande, Sowie die Reise des Pytheas von Massilien In einer im Jahre 1849 herausgegebenen und, wie es scheint, hier und da nicht ohne allen Beifall aufgenommenen Schrift habe ich darzuthun gesucht, dass das alte Tartessus, welches unsere Quellen in die Nahe und ausserhalb der Saulen des Herkules setzen, im Allgemeinen das heutige Tortosa an der Mundung des Ebro, die dortige beruhmte Phuniciercolonic aber moglieher Weise nicht die heutige Stadt Tortosa selbst, sondern das etwas weiter stromaufwarts am rechten Ufer des Flusses gelegene und vielleicht mit dem lbera des Livius identische Stadtchen Xerta gewesen sci. Von hier aus durch den Zusammen hang der Dinge beinahe wider Willen zur Geographie des alten Nordens, speciell des Zinn - und Bernsteinlandes, und auf diesem Wege endlich sogar bis zur lnsel Thule gefuhrt, wollte es mir scheinen, als ob der in der angefuhrten Schrift eingenommene Standpunkt auch einen gunstigen Blick auf dieses dunkle Terrain verspreche, weshalb ich mir die Muhe nicht habe sparen wollen, auch diese misslichen Regionen zu durchwandern. Es erscheint zweckmassig, den in jener Schrift eingenommenen Standpunkt kurz zu bezeichnen, namentlitch auch, um Einiges, was zur Vervollstandigung dienen kann, nachzutragen. Zwei schon im Alterthume eingeschlichene Missverstandtiisse scheinen es vorzugsweise zu sein, welche die alte, Geographie des westlichen Europa und die Vorstellungen von dem Handel der Phonicier mit dem Westen und Norden dieses Erdtheiles verwirrt haben.
