An adjunct professor, Mr. Harper taught more than 45 graduate-level classes at Hopkins on subjects ranging from existentialism to mysticism to American fiction. He was known internationally in academic circles and Harper wrote a dozen books, including "On Presence: Variations and Reflections, " which in 1992 won the prestigious Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion.
