Target age 9 to 13 and readers over 50. It wasn't her choice to go. But from the moment the bush plane splashed down on the Alaskan lake, there was no turning back for 11-year-old Monty. Her widowed father's job brought them to the edge of wilderness. Her journey that summer of 1953 would take her through rugged terrain, dangerous wildlife and unlikely friendships to the wonder and mystery beyond the Falls. Life at the camp at Brooks River comes with constant contradiction. The more beautiful and interesting something is, the more likely it is to be dangerous. Nothing embodies that more than the Falls. As the only child at the fishing camp, Monty endeavors to make friends, both human and wild animal, while fending off bullies. She learns from her new friend, Mrs. Devon, that even though the plants in the fields are beautiful, some of them are poisonous. Mr. Charles teachers her to appreciate the animals who live at camp but also to respect their power to put her in peril at any moment. But not all the adults at the camp at Brooks River are eager to warn Monty of potential dangers. One fishing guide named Doyle does not think children belong at a fishing camp and is determined to prove it. Through her own loss, Monty is familiar with the harshness of life. She witnesses the fish struggle to survive the bears as they, in turn, struggle to survive the coming winter. Monty and her father come to grips with risk, loss, and life on their Alaskan adventure.

ââ?¬Å"The Fallsââ?¬Â? by Janet R. Macreery is a truly captivating novel that is filled with adventure, excellent characters, beautiful scenery, and a great deal of learning about yourself as you grow and change. I can honestly say this is one of the best stories that I have read in quite a while and, while definitely written for younger readers, I believe that readers of any age could learn a lot from reading this book.
In ââ?¬Å"The Fallsââ?¬Â? we meet 11-year-old Montgomery, or Monty as she prefers to be called. Monty lost her mother when she was 4 and has been raised by her father, with a little help from a slightly overprotective and very loving Aunt Betty. Montyââ?¬â?¢s father has taken a job in the wilderness of Alaska for the summer and he is taking his daughter along with him so that she has a chance to be part of and see a different world. As they arrive at the camp where they will be staying Monty sees that while it is very beautiful and very different from what she is used to, it is also a place that can be very dangerous if you do not pay attention to what is going on around you.
While Montys father works hard at his job, she is determined to make some friends and find a way to fill her days, enjoy herself, and stay safe. She spends time with the camps cook, Mrs. Devon, and learns what plants and berries are safe and which ones are not and how to tell the difference. From Mr. Charles, who runs the small shop at camp, she learns all about the different animals in the Alaskan wilderness and she comes to understand not only how beautiful they are but also how dangerous and powerful they can be. While Monty tries to make the most of her time with her new friends and surroundings, she must also deal with the harshness of those surroundings and one bullying man who feels that camp is no place for children and decides to make that point to everyone at Montys expense.
ââ?¬Å"The Fallsââ?¬Â? is a riveting story that I really adored. With wonderfully descriptive writing, I dare anyone to read this book and not want to travel to Alaska to see all of this scenery and wildlife firsthand. That being said, there is also the wonderful protagonistââ?¬Â¦ Monty. She is a very charming and likable character and I think that many younger readers will be able to easily relate to her, which makes for an excellent story.
It is so much fun to go along with Monty on all her adventures and to watch her change from a scared and confused girl accompanying her father to this new place to one who grows much stronger and learns to face things more on her own, having learned a lot from her new friends. In addition to Monty, all of the other characters are very well-written and add so much to the story and to this young girls new way of looking at life and the hardships that are a part of it.
There is nothing about ââ?¬Å"The Fallsââ?¬Â? by Janet R. Macreery that is not wonderful. From the charactersââ?¬Â¦to the plotââ?¬Â¦to the sceneryââ?¬Â¦to the emotion, everything about the book is perfect. As I said, I would recommend this to young readers and adult readers alike. There is no way not to feel good after you finish that last page. Absolutely excellent. 5 Stars!
