Reminiscent of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting, this debut novel, The Elephant Tree challenges the reader's sense of morality with shocking plot twists and vivid characters. Mark Fallon is an overworked detective investigating a spate of attacks at a string of high profile city centre nightclubs. Scott is a dejected 24 year old struggling to make ends meet working for his brother and supplementing his income with a small-scale drug dealing operation. Angela is an attractive 23 year old, raised by her father, a career criminal and small time drug dealer who supplies Scott with cannabis. This is a chilling tale spanning a few months in the lives of Scott and Angela, where realizations about the present combine with shocking revelations from the past leading to an apocalyptic climax where they no longer know whom they can trust.

I bought the Elephant Tree on a whim just before Christmas, and read it on multiple trains during the snow-induced travel disruption of that time. Thank goodness I had a good book to see me through!
Truthfully, this isn?t a genre I usually chose, but the blurb happened to appeal in a limited selection, and I?m glad it did! This is a very reader friendly book, getting straight down to the story, and introducing characters rapidly, fleshing them out in their mannerisms and the way they behave rather than through reams and reams of boring description or history. The pace is rapid and the shocking revelations that come are still realistic and believable. The final twist is not one I predicted, although I sort of feel I came close from piecing together the bits and pieces that I picked up as the story progressed. That?s a good feeling as it means that the outcome is not one that has been flimsily tagged on, it?s fitting based on the story that has been read, rather than making the reader feel cheated by coming up with something ludicrous just to shock.
The main characters draw you in even though a lot of the time you find yourself disapproving of what they have done or are doing, something of an unusual approach as in many books the hero is whiter than white rather than mixed up in anything seedy, but as you get to share their personal hopes and ambitions, you can?t help hoping that they will get to where they want to be and ?win? against the odds.
I was so pleased with the book I bought copies for friends who are on my reading ?wavelength?, and would genuinely recommend it to anyone who just enjoys a good exciting story- definitely fans of crime, thriller type novels, but as my experience has shown, not just them! Will definitely read more of these books now, and certainly any more by this author as I know I will enjoy them.
