"Cape Cod is an island, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east; Nantucket SouNd to the south; Cape Cod Bay to the north and inside the forearm; the protected inlet of Buzzards Bay to the west; and the Cape Cod canal, running in a northeast-southwest direction through a broad valley where the shoulder joins the mainland of southeaster n Massachusetts. Miles Standish. Plymouth Colony's military officer, suggested a canal be dug through a valley the Indians used to portage their small boats across the isthmus at the cape's shoulder. Its cost, of course, was beyond the means of the small colony, but the idea of a through waterway was born. Finally, in 1899, the last charter to build a Cape Cod canal was granted, although it was ten yeas before construction began. The long path to the canal's completion in 1914 is a story of power struggles among the very wealthy and of the haphazard vitality of a booming nation. It is a story of many men working toward, and finally realizing, one dream.
