Seller's Description:
Good. No Jacket. Size: 12mo-over 6? "-7? " tall; Type: Hardback Hardcover Book in Good Condition. No publication date stated. c 1900. Originally published 1890. A collection of short stories about the adventures of privates Terence Mulvaney, Stanley Ortheris, and John Learoyd, three soldiers who appear in other writings by Kipling. With their humor and directness, they portray a side of the British in Afghanistan in the waning British Empire years that is not often seen. The soldiers often act the fool, criticizing their officers, but the rawness of the war in the mid-east as the British began to lose their hold is clearly seen. English short-story writer, poet, and novelist, Rudyard Kipling, was born in India of English parents; the impression of India in his early years and later influenced all of his writings. Kipling was the first English writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize, in 1907. The book is bound in green cloth with burgundy outlined panels on front and spine, with gilt illustration and lettering within. Clean, small white chalk-like line on front, about an inch long, otherwise unmarked. Moderate wear to extremities, scuffing to some corners. Sewn binding is solid, tight, and square. Inner hinge in front partially cracked. Top edge gilt. Foxing of fore edge. Short inscription in pencil on endpaper, dated 1901. B/w frontis. Pages are clean and unmarked, toned. Three full page b/w illustrations. Pencil writing on rear endpapers. Home-made pocket and United States Air Force stamp on rear paste-down. 315 pages. 5 x 7.6 inches. c 1900, Rand Mc Nally, Chicago, Illinois and New York, New York, USA.
