In a kingdom where souls are bound to magical animals called Shadows, Rowena's Shadow is a ghost-silent, powerless, and a death sentence if anyone finds out. Every citizen of Wyre shares a soul with his or her Shadow, a supernatural animal companion that gives each person the ability to perform magic. But Rowena was born with a ghost for a Shadow, incapable of magic and marking her as a dangerous anomaly. Her superstitious neighbors would say she must be reported to the king (and executed for good measure!). And they would report her, if they knew she existed-but they don't. Hidden from the world in a stone cottage at the edge of Torborough Forest, with only her father and Ghost for company, Rowena has made the best of her secret life. She fills her days among contraptions and inventions of her own making, tinkering away while longing for the magic everyone else has. When Penalynn Graft, a disgraced Scholastic who refuses to use her own Shadow's magic, is banished to Rowena's far-flung forest town, rumors swirl about her rebellion. Both Rowena and Penalynn are outcasts: one hidden, one exiled. Both are cut off from magic: one by birth, the other by choice. Together, they could unearth the truth about the bond linking humans to Shadows, which, until now, has been lost under a veil of secrecy. But in a superstitious world where souls are split in two, the truth might shatter everything. With the stakes of The Golden Compass, the action of The Wingfeather Saga, and the heart and spiritual heart of the Chronicles of Narnia, Shadowless is a fantasy that will captivate fans of epic adventures and magical worlds.

Shadowless. The title alone intrigued me and I just had to find out what it meant. I have to say that Alison Robinson's debut more than lived up to that most interesting title.
Shadowless features an imaginative world of magic that manages to feel both real and fantastical at the same time. Alison Robinson did an excellent job of fleshing out her magic system, the people, and their culture without bogging the story down.
Definitely aimed at a YA audience I still found Shadowless to be entertaining for me as an adult reader. I love a good clean YA fantasy read and this book from Alison Robinson is precisely that.
Rowena and Penalynn are both great characters. They are very different people but they are enjoyable to read about, easy to like, and you can't help but root for them.
As Shadowless seemed to end on a bit of a cliffhanger I am now most anxious to find out what happens next to my new friends and where Alison Robinson might take them in their journey....
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
