That is the Desired Effect.' Amid all the hilarity, Hunter S. Thompson proves just how brilliant a prose stylist he really is. Screwjack ... Read More

Thompson has a freehold on both of them' Tom Wolfe Read Less

Seller's Description:
Near fine. An association copy, an author's copy of this limited edition inscribed in a silver marker on the colophon: "#13 Author's Copy for Russell Chatham, HST, Hunter." Also signed in a gold marker on first blank, where Thompson has added in silver "Owl Farm, 3-6-92." Owl Farm was Thompson's home near Aspen, Colorado. The recipient is painter Russell Chatham, who spent the majority of his career outside of Livingston, MT, and was a catalytic member of the literary "Montana Gang" that included Thomas McGuane, Richard Brautigan, and his good friend Jim Harrison, who used Chatham's paintings on the covers of most of his books. Hunter S. Thompson was a collector of Chatham's work. Chatham was extraordinarily successful during the height of his career (his largest paintings sold for $1 million to celebrities), and his paintings remain iconic images of the Montana landscape and perhaps the Interior West at large. See this great and wandering tribute from Rick Bass in Angler's Journal. Chatham was also a talented writer, best known for his iconic work The Angler's Coast, and he was the publisher of Clark City Press, which published more than three dozen books including some of his own as well as books by Jim Harrison, Rick Bass, and others. This limited was the first edition of Screwjack, 300 numbered copies and 26 lettered copies, all signed. It consists of three short stories, quintessential Gonzo, two of which wouldn't become available in another form until the trade edition was published in 2000. A slender book of about 50 pages. Red cloth with gilt illustration on the cover and gilt lettering on the spine. Printed on Mowhawk Superfine paper. A slight slant to spine, otherwise fine. No dust jacket as issued. An excellent association.
