This is a fantastic story which, has stood the test of time. Written in the late sixties, the story of a developing if initially grudging friendship between a young teenager and a Hungarian refugee, is a thrilling tale of adventure and adversity.
When Szolda overhears a plot by fellow Hungarians to murder someone, no one is prepared to believe him. Only Woolcott, feeling sorry for Szolda, reluctantly tries to help him find and warn the intended victim. Soon the boys inadvertently become witnesses to a murder and the murderers now want to catch them and silence them. Not even the police will help the boys.
It's Christmas, heavy snow is everywhere. With no warm clothing, no food and little money, the boys set off on a perilous journey across snowy wastelands to find the one person who will believe their story. But the criminals are on their trail and closing in.
I have read and re read this story for children aged between 11 - 13 and I still love it. Despite the dull and dated front covers, it's a great read. Lots of dry humour and heart wrenching moments. The characters are well crafted and believable. The story builds to an exciting cliff hanger which keeps you guessing right up to the end.
A book which needs to be reprinted again and again!! Can't believe they haven't made it into a film.
