The second book in the award-winning Mortal Engines quartet. Far above Anchorage, a tiny aircraft falls from the sky. Having fled from London in Mortal Engines, Tom and Hester seek refuge in a city devastated by plague, haunted by ghosts, and filled with deadly secrets... Mortal Engines launched Philip Reeve's brilliantly-imagined creation, the world of the Traction Era, where mobile cities fight for survival in a post-apocalyptic future. Mortal Engines won the coveted Gold Smarties Award. Now a feature film of the same name, starring Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan and Hugo Weaving. Produced by Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson.

Anarcho-primitivism (colloquially, "green anarchy") can be a bit much for the children to daily swallow.
Instead, I recommend this book: the sequel to Phillip Reeve's equally inviting, if somewhat darker, "Mortal Engines."
This book is science-fiction. But, like the best of that genre, metaphor for the pressing confines of today. There is an economic ideal espoused by the main protoganist, Tom, with initial fervor. Its name? "Municipal Darwinism." And like present-day "National Darwinism," whereby nations with greater access to brute military technology, and dogma, strip the dying resources of lesser, third-world nations, Municipal Darwinism is a sham for greed, inequity, and ungentle cowardice.
Needless to say, the main protoganist does not persist in his belief. And with the unwinding of that faith, a new, renewable faith enjoins: in life, in time, and in the company of new-flung heroes.
And - as in life - there's time enough for teenage fun...
