Initial operations on the G & CU was an eight-mile trek from Chcago to Oak Park, Illinois in October of 1848. Hauled by the locomotive Pioneer, this also was the first train departure west out of Chicago. The Chicago and North Western Railway began its own train servivce in 1855. Both roads expanded through construction and merger. Nine years later, in 1864, the two companies merged under the C & NW name. Construction proceeded westward across Iowa reaching the Missouri River at Council Bluffs. The C & NW became a major hauler of supplies for the then-under-construction Union Pacific Railroad. When a through route was opened to the Pacific, the North Western became a part of this Overland Route." This book has 168 pages and is profusely illutrated.
