A judicious combination of both methods is doubtless the best, though this is not always easy of attainment in working with numbers - the use of this book may help in accomplishing it. It is suggested that at the beginning of a chapter, and in some cases with each problem, the teacher should give a black-board explanation, carefully pointing out any fresh steps, before sending his pupils to their work. The number I of examples in each chapter to be worked out by the student is, of course, left to the teacher's judgment of the progress and requirements of his pupil.
