This new book by Demi, a renowned author and illustrator of children's books, offers Biblical texts and illustrations about Jesus as the Messiah. The book is intended for children between 4 and 8 years of age. The subject matter is complex and profound for people of all ages.
The book takes Scriptural texts from both the Old and New Testaments and presents them without comment other than Demi's beautiful, imaginative illustrations. The texts include well-known passages from Isaiah often used as prophecies of the comming Messiah together with passages from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, among other sourses. Some passages are used to show the nature of the Messiah and the bringing of peace to the world. From the prophecy of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus, this little book moves quickly to texts involving the crucifiction and Resurrection of Jesus and of the significance of the Resurrection in offering hope and eternal life to humanity. The book does not discuss the preaching and teaching of Jesus during his life.
This is a moving little book that introduces children to the Christian belief in Jesus as the Messiah. The interesting question about this book is how parents or other readers may make use of it and discuss it with children. By way of background, Demi is the author of many children's books with themes from many religious including Buddhism, Sufism, Judaism, Hinduism and others in addition to Christianity. She is not herself a Christian. So too, the publisher of the book, Wisdom Tales, publishes chidren's books showing the variety of religious and spiritual traditions from around the world.
Some readers might come to this book to teach young children about the commitments of their birth religion of Christianity. That would be a proper thing to do. But I approach the book within the contexts of Demi's writing as a whole and of series of books published by Wisdom Tales. This reading gives the book a broader, more ecumenical purpose. It brings the Christian teaching of Jesus and Messianism within the context of a short introduction for children to the depth and variety of the world's spiritual traditions. These traditions include Christianity as an important part. Humans have approached spirituality and the divine from many perspectives shown to children in Demi's and in Wisdom Tales books, among other sources. This approach, I think, is appropriate in reading this book and in discussing it with young children. In other words, it is part of an ecumenical approach. Again ecumenism and spirituality are profound concepts in themselves, difficult to understand for adults not to speak of children.
I enjoyed this book, and I have enjoyed reading books from Demi and from Wisdom Tales over the years. Wisdom Tales kindly sent me a copy of "Messiah" for review.
