Thirteen-year-old asthmatic Edward reluctantly accompanies his family on a trip to England, where he becomes acquainted with the ghost of a historical figure, whose unclear intentions cause Edward some anxiety before that relationship resolves both itself and problems between Edward and his father as well. Thirteen-year-old asthmatic Edward reluctantly accompanies his family on a trip to England, where he becomes acquainted with the ghost of Richard III. Ann Rabinowitz (1930-2014) was educated at the Horace Mann and Fieldston Schools, and at Radcliffe College and Barnard College (BA 1950). She later pursued graduate studies at New York University, where she took her MA in 1982 and was ABD in Medieval History. She was a published poet, and the author of two novels, Knight on Horseback (Atheneum 1987) and Bethie (Atheneum 1989). Annie was at work on two additional books at the time of her death: a children's book about family life in a family which had lost a child to illness, and an adult novel about a feminist awakening in the New York psychiatric community of the 1940's. This book, focused around a young boy named Edward on a trip to England with his family, is completely saturated with English royal history. Richard III, one of Shakespeare's most famous villains, is the centerpiece for this novel that takes place in many places in England but mostly around historical places that were influential to Richard's life. Edward meets the ghost of Richard and gets to know him in an entirely different way then history paints him.
