If you read only one novel by Larry Brown, let it be JOE. It is, without a doubt, his best novel. And, once you've finished JOE, heck, you may want to just go ahead n' read FAY, its sequel (of sorts). I'm always annoyed with reviewers who simply recite synopses of novels, movies, plays, etc. so I will avoid doing so. Don't know about you, but I like the story to unfold before my eyes without any preconceived notions. However, I will throw out one brief, apt description at you: it is the story of a boy from a desperately-poor and dysfunctional Southern family who is taken under the wing of Joe, a local "good ol' boy." You could call it "a buddy story." Also, let me just say that if you've read Larry's FACING THE MUSIC: STORIES (my personal favorite of all of his works) and enjoyed it, you can't go wrong with JOE.
