This is the follow-up intermediate textbook to Mizutani's 'An Introduction to Modern Japanese'. But first, let's get the negatives out of the way: the layout is quite confusing in the exercises section and takes some getting used-to. You need to memorize about 300 words in each chapter, which is alot of Kanji ! In the whole book you will learn at least 3500 words.The grammar itself is simply explained, so word memorization is the main challenge. The exercises consist of sentence building, reading practise, and English-to-Japanese translations. ALL of the exercises are self-learner based, there are NO group, listening, or class exercises at all ! There are other intermediate textbooks available but they don't come close to matching the vocabulary of this book, and most of them are not as suitable for self-learners. So if you don't mind a bit of hard work then this book is very rewarding. If your background is 'Japanese for Everyone', Mizutani's beginnner's book, or Eleanor Harz Jorden's bookset , then you will manage well with this book.
