This debut is one of the more charming novels I've read. Bay Area residents will enjoy guessing the book's obvious local inspirations for its more satirical characters (though some may quibble with a few misplaced East Coast details). Not to worry if you're not from San Francisco; the book deftly balances quirky, madcap details with a refreshingly humane sense of humor that all but guarantees widespread appeal. There is a strangely timeless quality to the narrative, one mysterious dot-com millionaire aside. Especially recommended for fans of the late, great SJ Perelman.
