For those who have read other Fu Manchu books, this is a marked departure from Rohmer's usual style. Rather than the accustomed secret spying/following/weird murder attempts, eerie dread looking over characters shoulder, this is straightforward action adventure. Nayland does not appear until midway through the book. There is the predictable exotic romance and rescue attempt, but except for flying insects and Cold Men, none of Fu Manchu's odd murder vehicles. In fact there are few deaths until finale. Fu Manchu even comes across as justifiable. A change of pace in the series.
