With a fine style, absorbing characters, and plots that keep you guessing, Ruth Rendell has an excellent and well deserved reputation as a superb mystery writer. It's kind of sad here, just when you've got to be very fond of the first victim, he winds up under the ice in a wintry pond. Thereafter, you are fully aware that his death was not accidental, because you were there. But for the rest of the course, you are plodding along in the footsteps of Inspector Wexford on an exceptionally twisted road to the solution. Interesting how a perfectly traditional structure can sit up and grab you through its people. I have always been impressed with the archetypal depths of the mystery genre, and this book did not disappoint.
