A disappointment after "Suite Francaise." The story, which appears to be semi-autobiographical, is an extended cliche that must have only given fuel to the stereotypes that flamed the Holocaust conflagration. It's not surprising that it was a best-seller in pre-Hitler France. Despite the fact that the characters are one-dimensional and undeveloped and the plot little more than an extended medical incident, it is recommended as an insight to the author as a developing writer and as a counterpoint to the beautifully written and moving "Suite Francaise."
