The introduction to the pupils' lesson offers an adequate form of introduction to the indirect question in past sequences. The sentences under C should be made the basis of incessant drill to avoid or clear up the difficulties in tense sequence. (See the general introduction to the indirect question, and the suggested indirect question formulas, with comment, and foot-note, in notes on XLI.) In memorizing the form-paradigms insist that the pupil prefix some phrase like "quaero (quaesivi) quid..." Teach the cum-constructions independently of the reading-section. "Vocabulum cum quod praepositio est, iam bene intellegitis. Sed cum quod coniunctio est, multum a praepositione differt, et in significationes habet." I. Cum concessive (avoid the term): --to be recognized, understood and "defined" (see below), but not necessarily to be formed by the pupil (hence not included in Formula VII, although the teacher may add it, with its "defining" sentence). Use the sentences and form of explanation ("definition") given in the pupils' lesson. 'Tamen = non minus = nihilominus.' Illustrate by sentences like "cum paucos libros haberet, nihilominus multum sciebat; cum malum calamum habeat, optime tamen scribit; cum iustum rectumque sciat, tamen malum facit." These and similar sentences must be "defined" (restated) by the pupil, e.g., "Paucos libros habebat, sed nihilominus..." etc. As question-word use "qua re obstante (repugnante), tamen...?"
