What if the world youd always known was coming to an end, and you just found out? What would you do to try to save everyone? In Areta by Daniel Rirdan, Angora and Sargon have discovered that the world they live on is actually a ship taking them to a final destination. While the original way out was destroyed by their ancestors, they use their skills to find a new way to get everyone to the safety they deserve. All the while, there is a new generation growing up with mysterious abilities that nobody really understands. Will Lilit, Sargons adopted daughter, be able to learn control? Or will she end up coercing others to her whims?
There is so much to unpack in this book. Rirdan did such a phenomenal job creating a unique and complex world with so many moving parts. All the while, he worked them all out so that they tied together by the end! The beginning of the book presents as if sent back in time to another world. However, women are described as larger (some up to seven feet tall) and the ones who are dominant in relationships. Throughout the story, you learn that there is more to their world and that it possibly started out completely different, with a world-saving mission in mind.
As far as humans go, there is a change that has occurred in them over time that gives them unique abilities that have been suppressed in most of their generation. I am really curious to see if Rirdan decides to write a sequel that explores these even more! It was quite fascinating how the attributes that began to appear were designed for a specific purpose.
The worldbuilding was phenomenal! Rirdan created a completely functioning world on a ship with plants, animals, and human-operated traveling devices. Seeing how he incorporated the signs of the end goal into the daily routine of the people was so creative and inventive!
I really loved the depth he went into with each of the characters as well. None was inherently evil or absolutely perfect. They all had struggles and goals throughout the story that made them more real. The interactions between them also showed a level of complexity that is needed for readers to connect with the characters.
Some of the human interactions were a bit on the female-dominance side. This is due to the way the society ââ?¬Å"bredââ?¬Â? over time to increase female strength. Because of this, there were a few scenes in the story where we were privy to this in a more intimate setting. While nothing was described in minute detail, it was still enough that we were able to picture exactly what was going on between the woman and either man or woman of her choosing. While there was only one fully open-door bedroom scene, there were multiple moments in the story leading up to it.
Areta by Daniel Rirdan is an absolutely phenomenal adult science fiction story that explores the idea of a utopian world while traveling through space to a new destination. While there isnt a lot of action, there is quite a bit of building and innovation. There is also romance and acceptance of the new. There is a mild amount of cursing. Due to some intimate moments mentioned in more detail above, I would recommend it for an adult audience only. Rirdans Areta is definitely one to check out if you love reading about different societies and what could be! I am hopeful there will be even more exploration into this world, and I will look forward to it if so!
