In a small north Georgia town, Joseph Owens is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or is he? At a local diner, the owner and his chef are found murdered. Although no one can place Owens at the crime scene, he soon becomes the number one suspect because of an earlier altercation with his boss and his checkered past. Evidence is circumstantial and thin, but District Attorney Paul Chastin needs a conviction. Heââ?¬â?¢s got sympathetic victims with grieving families, a community on edge, and a reelection campaign with a serious challenger to fend off. ââ?¬Å"A Terrible Guiltââ?¬â?¢ by Bob Rothman takes readers on an inside tour of a justice system fraught with problems.
Itâs not surprising when Owens, a Black busboy with a temper and a sketchy past, is convicted by a mostly white juryâ"with the death penalty on the table. Attorneys Elena Samuels and Greg Williams from an Atlanta firm get wind of the case and investigate, each with their own motivations for digging deeper into the case. They take on Owensâ appeal pro bono, much to the chagrin of some of the firmâs principals, and what they find shocks them to the core. Now their careers and the very lives of the Atlanta lawyers may be in jeopardy as well.
The story is familiar and all too common, the perfect storm of an aggressive prosecutor, systemic racism, and a justice system thats not foolproof. Rothmans legal expertise is on display throughout the book, with detailed trial scenes, political wrangling, and the wider repercussions of the death penalty and its imperfections laid bare for readers.
A light touch of sweet romance between two of the characters is a welcome respite from the case. The book could have benefited from a more in-depth treatment of Owens, who doesnt get much page time, especially initially, making it harder for the reader to invest emotionally in his predicament.
ââ?¬Å"A Terrible Guiltââ?¬Â? by Bob Rothman would appeal to hardcore legal thriller fans who appreciate a detailed and accurate portrayal of the justice system and enjoy rooting for the underdog. A meticulous legal thriller with heartwarming idealism.
