Part Two of Coppola's grisly but riveting Mafia story. The FIRST FILM took three of the major Academy Awards in 1972, and defying all expectations, this follow-up took out twice as many two years later. This film contrasts the life of his son and now-melancholy successor (Al Pacino) with Don Vito's early days as a Sicilian immigrant in New York. The year is 1958 and Michael Corleone reflects on his problems and his father before him. It is an epic vision of the corruption of America. It is a curious rehash of the part of the original with new scenes, a shade difficult to follow but full of good performances. A Paramount picture, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The SIX ACADEMY AWARDS were for BEST FILM, BEST DIRECTOR, BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (Robert De Niro), BEST SCREENPLAY ADAPTATION (Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo), BEST ART DIRECTION (Dean Tavoularis, Angelo Graham and George R. Nelson) and BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (Nino Rota and Carmine Coppola).
