I first received a copy of this book around 40 years ago as a gift from a dear friend who has passed on. In the wake of sadness accompanying my divorce I somehow failed to take this book along.
I decided to find a copy of this amazingly intriguing story of some of the largest and most gentle creatures with which we share our planet.
The writing style is like having a friend that knows as much as one could at that time, in the 1960's, telling you about the life of a whale and her baby in a real "circle of life' story. One might wonder how could a tale of a year in the life of a whale mother and her baby be anything but a crashing bore. To think so would be a tragic mistake.
If you have any desire to read a very beautiful story told by a gifted writer who is in love with his subject and knows just how to tell you how our lives are intertwined with these gentle giants then this is a book you must read to understand how I feel about it.
Since I received the book I have already read and re-read it in just this short span of time. It is a 'friend of mine' that I will cherish all my days. I commend it wholeheartedly to you who need to feel wonder at this creation in which we temporarily dwell. If only I could I would put a copy of this book into the hand of every home on the earth - it's that good.
Note: There is another 'companion' book by this same author entitled A Year in the Life of A Seal. It too is a must read and own book.
