A great story about being your own worst critic and beauty coming from within. I really like the fact that this Beauty is a lot more believable.

I want only to second what Michal has written so beautifully. I "met" this book after I had already read a couple of Robin's books. This one (my favorite fairy tale anyway) struck such a chord in me that I re-read it three times before I could move on to another book. It's that compelling. I, also, re-read it annually (October). I often find myself giving it to friends who need womething soothing to read with their tea. I keep my Hard cop and a soft cover on hand just in case!
If you love this book as much as I do, you might try "Spindle's End" buy the same author. The prose is just as wonderful, there is a bit more humour, and the end is - well - delightful and surprising.

Best Beauty and the Beast
I picked this book up one night while babysitting to pass the time, but within the first few pages I was captivated. I had to ask the girl I was babysitting if I could borrow her book because I just couldn't put it down.
Not only is the story enchanting- McKinley weaves a recognizable but far superior version of the classical fairytale- but her prose is lyrical and vivid, making the book feel at once like a fairytale and a personal narrative. The characters are lifelike and charming, from the main characters to the ones that only make one appearance. McKinley's book is a wonderful, skillful rendition of a lovely story, one I re-read every year.

beautiful, lyrical, funny
I read this story as a teenager, after devouring "The Hero and the Crown" and "The Blue Sword." I was not disappointed with this tale, loving it almost as much as the other two. It is simple in plot and construction, like the original fairy tale, but rich in detail and character. Neither Beauty nor the Beast is a caricature, or one-dimensional--and neither is her family. Their friendship and love develop naturally. And the magical elements add delightful dimension to the story. I remember seeing the Disney cartoon some few years later and thinking to myself that they'd stolen elements from this story, and looked in vain for a credit to McKinley. Of course, that was before I realized that both share elements with the original French tale (the library, the talking furniture, etc.) Re-reading it as an adult doesn't diminish the story's magic. A very impressive first novel from an award-winning author.

Version nicely done
This retelling of the 'Beauty and the Beast' story is very nicely done -- I particularly liked the portrayal of the heroine's intelligence and her sometimes dry sense of humor.
