Good. No Jacket. Edge wear, some light foxing to boards, corners bumped; This book was written during an era when Sabah was known as North Borneo, and when life was very much different from today's. Reprinted many times, this classic, of Agnes Keith's observations and reflections of the time, is a true-to-life record of society and culture then and of the captivating natural beauty of Sabah. Today, Sabah continues to be known as the "land below the wind", a phrase used by seafarers in the past to describe all the lands south of the typhoon belt, but which Agnes effectively reserved for Sabah through her book. One of few written accounts of contemporary life in Borneo in the 1930s, this book is an invaluable record of a world gone by.

This "Land Below the Wind" is the prequel to the Keith's capture by the Japanese and worlds away from the drums of war and civilization. I first read Keith's book "Three Came Home" a number of years ago and loved her descriptive, both horrendous and humorous, story of living in a Japanese civilian prisoner of war camp with her son and separated from her husband. Keith can paint pictures with writing ease such that you can feel the jungle heat, the bite of mosquitoes, the fight for survival, and see the beauty of the natives and their jungle. A very enjoyable read.
Highly recommend both works by Agnes Newton Keith.
