In my opinion, this series comprises the best of Moon's writing. The characters are fully realized and three-dimensional, the action both exciting and realistic, and the plotting follows the logic of the reality the author has created. Moon served in the Marine Corps and is a volunteer EMT in her community; she is also a naturalist with a degree in Biology, and her interests include horses, singing, hiking, kayaking and photography. This eclectic background both inspires and informs her writing, making her created realities and the characters inhabiting them unusually rich and well-realized. These attributes reach their peak in Paksenarrion?s world. Definitely worth a read ? or three. Each time I read one of Moon?s stories, I find nuances and layers that eluded me during the first read, when I am caught up in the story. These are my favorite stories from one of my favorite authors.

A truly wonderful journey
Someone referred me to this book/trilogy as a good resource for gaining a fuller understanding of the paladin. Although it does provide that, it does so much more. In fact, because Moon relates the tale in such a full, rich, and real manner, the "lessons" do not jump off the page. I found myself engrossed in Paks' life, and its twists and turns and ups and downs, as opposed to taking notes on how a paladin behaves and thinks. And she took me on a truly wonderful ride.
As some other reviews stated, the magic of Moon lies in the "realness" of her writing. I am a lover of high fantasy, with its elves, dwarves, undead, magic, and such. Moon does not dwell on these in this book. But, i did not miss it at all and in fact, the sparing use of it probably made the tale more immersive.
I cannot say enough about this book. So i will not try, save to say the degree of sadness i feel upon finishing a book remains one of my firmest measures of how much i loved reading it. Needless to say, i felt tinges of depression upon finishing this one.
Great job! I wil be reading all of Moon's other book, although based on the reviews, i will have to lower my expectations some. But even if only half as good as Deeds, i have become a forever fan.

Wonderful character development
I'm going out on a limb here and stating that Elizabeth Moon has managed to create a more compelling story than Tolkien in a tolkienesque world. To me, the characters are more real and their journeys are even more personal. The sacrifices are felt more deeply and the bonds created are real. This trilogy remains my all-time favorite! I hope you'll pick it up and enjoy it for yourself! Like the previous reviewer stated, this is the firt book I go to when re-reading a novel.

Chesterton
Without a doubt, Elizabeth Moon's finest work, and one of my most frequently reread books. This book follows the development of Paksenarrion, born the daughter of a sheepfarmer, as she becomes a warrior. Combining a compelling plot with spectacular character development, this book is a sharp contrast to the way warriors are often portrayed both in literature and in role-playing games. In the process, the book addresses what is truly meant by concepts such as courage, cowardice, nobility, and honor. Be warned, you will become attached to the characters, nor is this a Disney-style adventure where nobody (or only the bad guy) gets hurt. (Originally published in three books: Sheepfarmer's Daughter, Divided Allegiance, Oath of Gold)
