Very Good. 0918740088 1988 signed first edition San Diego Historical Society (San Diego, California), 8 5/8 x 11 1/8 inches tall green cloth hardbound (a custom binding by DeRu's Fine Art Books of Bellflower, California, of the paperbound issue, with original covers bound in), no dust jacket, gilt lettering to front cover and spine, copiously illustrated with black-and-white and full color images, 83 pp. Slight rubbing and edgewear to covers. Signed by the artist's daughter on the page (xi) with her essay, 'The Artist as I Knew Him. ' Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy-clean, bright and unmarked. A special edition published in conjunction with the art exhibition presented by the San Diego Historical Society at the Museum of San Diego History in Balboa Park from June 18 to July 31, 1988. One of San Diego's most important artists, Alfred R. Mitchell (1888-1972) prospected for gold and drove a stage coach in Nevada before coming to San Diego in 1909. He first studied under Maurice Braun before heading east to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. After his academic training and a tour of Europe on scholarship he returned to San Diego in 1920 and stayed there for the rest of his life. The 'Dean of San Diego Artists, ' Mitchell was the co-founder of the La Jolla Art Association and an influential teacher in addition to his acclaim as a painter.
