If whole language is to survive in today's social and political climate, educators need to take action. They need to protect themselves against threats from within and outside the movement. The most obvious are challenges from critics who offer simplistic solutions to the perceived ills of education through a return to "the basics". Far more complex and challenging are issues that arise from within, issues that should, in Susan Church's view, be of much greater concern to all who position themselves somewhere along the progressive continuum. This text is Church's call to action - her appeal to all educators to become more overtly political. She believes that whole language philosophy offers a powerful perspective through which classroom pedagogy, staff development practices, and educational reform efforts can be transformed. The book gives examples drawn from Church's experiences as a teacher, curriculum supervisor, and senior manager. She offers a critical analysis of approaches to teacher change, educational reform, and educational leadership that disempower teachers and students and result in only the appearance of change. She urges educators to take a critical stance in their work, whether it be in the classroom, as a school administrator, or at a district level, suggesting that whole language must assume a more critical edge if it is to reach its potential as a force for positive change. Examples of how a whole language agenda is also a political agenda are provided.
