Fair . . . and Beautiful!
The is a truly beautiful book. The pictures are outstanding. How sad that we are losing the history of the beautiful habits worn by so many of our Catholic sisters--especially in an age in which young women would definitely rather join a community that wears a habit than one that does not. Cloistered sisters, like the Poor Clares, Carmelites, and Sisters of the Visitation ,are swampted with candidates while the Benedictines, who for the most part gave up their lovely habits for the glory of a polyester pant suit, are dying for lack of vocations. This book is also very fair in telling the history of the holy habit and the pros and cons of wearing the habit. My prayer is that our communities will return to some form of the traditional habit. With Pope Benedict leading the way by sending a conservative Mother Superior to visit the communities of women religious in the United States, there is yet hope. In the meantime, read this beautiful book, and soak up the history of the, indeed, "holy" habit!
