Osip Mandelstam

Born in 1891, Osip Mandelstam was one of Russia's greatest poets and a key member of the Acmeist group. Throughout his life--which included the Civil War--he and his wife led an almost nomadic existence. He was arrested repeatedly as a subversive during the Stalin era, and disappeared in 1938. Bernard Meares, the translator, is British, a former journalist who for many years lived and studied in Russia.
