Mary Seacole

Mary Jane Seacole (1805-1881) was a Jamaican nurse and a heroine of the Crimean War. When she was refused a post as a nurse during the Crimean War, Seacole went on her own initiative and in 1856 established a medical clinic at her own expense in order to provide "a mess-table and comfortable quarters for sick and convalescent officers." Like Florence Nightingale, she is remembered a champion for nurses.
