Gaston LeRoux

Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux (1868-1927) was a French journalist, court reporter, film pioneer, and novelist best known for The Phantom of the Opera . Born in Paris, Gaston Leroux studied law but opted for a career as a correspondent at the Paris newspaper Le Matin. He covered the 1905 Russian Revolution and, most influentially, the dungeons below the Paris Opera House, which once held the prisoners of the radical Paris Commune.
