This is a very practical Yoga book from the 1960s. The author relates to all readers in general and any readers with health issues in particular. He starts with his own story as a sick boy in Southern India, seriously ill in childhood with numerous diseases. When he could finally attend school, he was exempted from physical education due to frailty. He envied the children with rugged health, and withdrew into a corner during gym classes. But something gave his spirit the initiative to be unbroken, in spite of the weak body. Around age 15, he was less ill, and managed to escape into the fields and forests nearby, searching for a Yogi or ashrams. He believes that this search was out of an inborn instinct for admiring spiritual sciences and the gurus who practiced them. His efforts to find a teacher were fruitless in the beginning, so he read every book he could find on Yoga and spiritual knowledge. He tried to do yoga asanas (postures), but his body and breath were too weak.
One evening he ran away again, and found a Yogi under a mango grove, teaching his disciples. He had found his mentor, teacher and doctor! Two months after learning with this guru, no one in school or his doctor could recognize him because of his vibrant health! After the training, his guru asked him to go to the West which was in ?turmoil? and teach Yoga, which according to the guru, is his most sacred duty. This is how the author came to Europe.
The book is helpful for anyone interested in Yoga Science and Philosophy, but is especially useful for those who want to learn the therapeutic effects of ancient asanas. Execution, therapeutic effects and psychic effects of many postures are explained very well in Part I. Part II of the book is breathing exercises and their effects. There are 74 black and white photos of the yoga postures performed by the author.
This book is highly recommended by this reviewer for anyone, but is a must for those who want to learn Yoga as therapy.
