Near Fine in J Near Fine jacket. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" Bright, exceptionally nice copy. First edition / First printing. Author's first book, composed mainly of work selected from his 10 years at The New Yorker. Jacket has very slight fading to spine; faint traces of wear. 304pp.
Fine in Very Good jacket. First edition. Fine in an about very good, price-clipped, Birnbaum-designed dustwrapper with some chipping at the crown and rear panel, and other modest wear. This copy Inscribed, apparently to the wife of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author J.P. Marquand: "For Mrs. J.P. Marquand With all good wishes--from Philip Hamburger (who does not swipe plates) N.Y.C. May, 1951" (the "Mrs." is smudged and could read "Mr."). In 1952 Hamburger wrote a biography of J.P. Marquand entitled J.P. Marquand Esquire: A Portrait in the Form of a Novel. This is the author's first book, a scarce collection of his often humorous columns from his first ten years with The New Yorker, with an interesting association.
Fine in Very Good jacket. First edition. About fine in a very good dustwrapper with a couple of very faint spots and light wear on the spine. This copy Inscribed to Joseph Mitchell and his wife: "For Joe and Therese with the high regard of Phil Hamburger." The author's first book, a scarce collection of his often humorous columns from his first ten years with The New Yorker. Hamburger and colleagues at the magazine for nearly sixty years. Along with A.J. Liebling, they were the important core of the third wave of reporters for the magazine that pretty much permanently defined the direction of the magazine that continues to this day. A wonderful association.
