Hamill is exceptionally interesting. 99 full page plates. Text block is tight and bright, with occasional fingermarks. Examples of Cleland's artistry run the gamut from program covers, menus, bookplates, headpieces, advertisements, title pages, and diplomas to private Christmas cards, and more. There are five pps. of color advertising for Cadillac Autos in 1927, costume sketches for "Scaramouche, " illustrations of early mathmetical instruments, and elegant chapter initials. This is arguably the best of life before computer type!
G. First edition. This is #535 of 1200 copies bound in black cloth with g old lettering. 99 plates, 9 1/2" x 12 1/2", 99 pages + limitation at r ear. Good condition. The binding is rubbed at the corners and spine ti ps. The head of the spine has a tiny closed tear. The rear board with some moderate spotting. Former owner's name and date inked on the fron t fly. A few pages have fingerprint marks at the margins. Pages 63/64 have small holes to the top edges of the blank margin else contents ar e uniformily clean and tight with tissue guards in place where called for. A solid copy with moderate wear. Edition limited to 1200 copies, this one of 1145 without the signed proof by Rockwell Kent, 4to, pp. xxiv, , 99; decorative designs by Cleland throughout, including one large folding sample tipped in, many printed in color; extremities lightly rubbed, else a very good, sound copy in orig. black buckram lettered in gilt, t.e.g., retaining a stained, chipped, split and torn dust jacket. Cleland was a major figure in graphic arts in the early part of this century. His work covered a broad spectrum in design, from automobile advertisements to book design.
