"Walter Crane's Toy Books Shilling Series, " number 73 in the series of Walter Crane's books published by Routledge. Prominent Victorian and Edwardian English artist and book illustrator, Walter Crane, collaborated with Edmund Evans to illustrate a series of sixpenny books of nursery rhymes in three colors. Its cover art shows markedly the infuence of Jananese art developing into the Aesthetic Movement on his work (especially in children's books), and of a long visit to Italy following his marriage in 1871. His work was characterized by sharp outlines and flat tints. Six bifolia letterpress, printed on one side only, four single-page and one double-page color wood-engravings by Walter Crane, pictorial wrappers, the upper cover has title, series title and imprint in brown, within elaborate blue, orange and brown color wood-engraving. Covers rubbed, spine frayed and slightly soiled. Contents very bright. List of "Routledge's Shilling Toy Books" printed in brown on back cover, with decorative border. Very good.
