This little book has been one of my favorites since my eleven year old daughter bought it at a book fair in 1975. The first thing I loved about it was the beautiful cover: a colored drawing of a Medieval woman, standing in a garden, tenderly holding...a mouse. Any historical period grabs me, so thank you illustrator Judy Graese for piquing my interest.
The story revolves around Ariane, a poor young widow, her husband's last message to her, the ruin of a castle she owns, her old servant, Moag, three evil (or are they?) young men, and a neighboring Baron. For such a little book the story's twists and turns, Ariane's steadfastness in many things and the mystery of her husband's final message to her all add up to a sweet story of love, romance, kindness, evil and... well, you'll just have to read it to find out why The Treasure is the Rose.
