Europe in 1618 was riven between Protestants and Catholics, Bourbon and Hapsburg--as well as empires, kingdoms, and countless principalities. After angry Protestants tossed three representatives of the Holy Roman Empire out the window of the royal castle in Prague, world war spread from Bohemia with relentless abandon, drawing powers from Spain to Sweden into a nightmarish world of famine, disease, and seemingly unstoppable destruction.

Thirty Years War
Excellent comprehensive view of a critical period in European history. . . fascinating take on various central figures, i.e. Emperor Ferdinand, Wallenstein. . . .
exceptionally well written, even though the subject is complicated. . .stay with it and the confusions dissipate. . .

Reads like the history book it is. If you want an understanding of the 30 Year War in Germany this is the book for you. It is helpful it you have a good map of Germany in the time beside you as you read.

A genuine tour de force
The history of the 30 years was written by Dame C.V. Wedgwood, a distinguished historian of the Inter-War years. It is a very successful attempt to cover the complexity of those thirty years and shows a remarkable grasp of detail and a searching analysis of the major issues involved. No doubt Revisionist historians have since made their re-assessments but any reasonable critic would see this book as a genuine tour de force.
