Written by investigative journalist Victor Malarek (of Canadian television's W5), "The Natashas" is a disturbing account of sexual slavery in Eastern Europe. While it is written in an easily accessible style, despite what some of the listings for this book describe it is likely not appropriate material for younger readers. This is a brutally frank story of young women who are kidnapped, raped, and sold into sexual slavery. It is a hard hitting investigation of the complicity of local police and government officials, big business, the United Nations, and of foreign peacekeepers (including Canadian soldiers) in the sexual slavery of young women. Compelling, difficult to put down, and even more difficult to forget, this is a book which changes conceptions of the roles those who have the power to protect play in perpetrating crimes of violence against young women.
