New York: Burt, 1924. Early reissue from Bobbs-Merrill first edition plates. Very Good hardcover; spine lettering fading; w/o dustwrapper. Weird invention. Neil Barron called this one, "A racist piece of trash interesting as a sample of popular quasi-scientific poppycock in the period" [1976 "Anatomy of Wonder], but Bleiler, as sensitive as anyone to racist matters, had good words for it in "SF: The Early Years." Thompson was an Aesthete and good friends with James Huneker (1857-1921), the eccentric theater and music critic who also wrote a bit of fantasy and horror. Together with Huneker they did all in their power to popularize the Symbolists and European fin de siecle Decadence in America. Scarce title.
