Harry Bosch is facing the end of the line. He's been put on the DROP - Deferred Retirement Option Plan - and given three years before his retirement is enforced. Seeing the end of the mission coming, he's anxious for cases. He doesn't have to wait long. First a cold case gets a DNA hit for a rape and murder which points the finger at a 29-year-old convicted rapist who was only eight at the time of the murder. Then a city councilman's son is found dead - fallen or pushed from a hotel window - and he insists on Bosch taking the case despite the two men's history of enmity. The cases are unrelated but they twist around each other like the double helix of a DNA strand. One leads to the discovery of a killer operating in the city for as many as three decades; the other to a deep political conspiracy that reached back into the dark history of the police department.

One of the amazing things about Michael Connelly is that he brings the reader into the inner workings of LA's police and politics. THE DROP refers to Deferred Retirement Option Plan for LAPD. Through this program, Harry Bosch is allowed to delay his retirement for a certain number of years.
This is an exciting story of Harry Bosch drive to get as many perps into prison before his tenure is over (he's been given 39 more months). On the same day that he's given the good news about his extension, Harry and his partner get 2 cases - one a cold case and then a fresh case.
The second case is tainted with lots of politics. Irvin Irving's son seems to have jumped from the 7th floor of an upper scale hotel. Could the title refer to the son's drop onto the concrete below the hotel?
Irvin Irving is Harry's sworn enemy; but Irving has demanded that Harry is named the detective in charge of the investigation. Harry has been ordered (by the LAPD police chief) to drop the cold case to spend all his time on the politically-charged case. If you know Harry, you know he won't do that.
This story rushes along with lots to twists and turns. Harry and his partner David haven't seemed to be a good match. The strain reaches the breaking point during this book.
Whenever Harry and Irvin Irving clash - the story gets really interesting. This one does not disappoint!

A must read for a hooked Connelly fan
I got hooked on Michael Connelly with The Lincoln Lawyer. I read it before the movie came out. I was hooked. I lived in L.A. for 35 years practicing civil law. I enjoyed a realistic (for me) fact pattern in the criminal world and courts. And I loved relating to various places in L.A. with which I was familiar and have been a bit homesick for them. Anyhow, I have read all of Connelly's fiction except for Blood Work I got a bit obsessive. This is kind of like the last Harry Potter book for me. I hope Connelly has some more books in him, especially for Harry Bosch.
