Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 8vo Clean and tight in original blue cloth binding in very good dustjacket. In the light of scholarly criticism of the last few decades, new depths and complexities in Chaucer's poetry have become apparent, and new problems of interpretation have arisen, which have come to centre on the question of ironic intent, or "allegory, " in his major poems. This study of Troilus and Criseyde approaches the problem primarily by verbal analysis of ambiguous passages in the poem. The ambiguities are seen to be a way of revealing the Christian philosophy of love that the poem is expounding, while at the same time recognizing the paradox of that philosophy and the human problem. By its examination of Chaucer's poetic methods, this book may help those readers who are convinced of the poet's sympathy for the lovers in his story to reconcile that sympathy with the poem's morality.; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
